These are the 3 education-related books I’ve chosen for summer reading. Find my reading list on Bookshop.org

The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt

I’ve been hearing Jonathan Haidt on several Podcasts and news interviews., and some teachers in my school recommended this book after completing a book study. As a high school reading teacher, this will inform my classroom rules & policies, and as a parent of teens, this will give us some good points of discussion as we navigate this era of cell phone use.

Universal Design for Learning in English Language Arts by Katie Novak

My goal as a literacy specialist this year is to make myself available to model UDL strategies in colleague classrooms.

THE ZEN TEACHER by Dan Tricarico

Jennifer Gonzalez interviewed Dan Tricarico on her Podcast Cult of Pedagogy this week. His insights and reflections hit just right at this stage in my career. He wrote the book when he had about 10 years left in teaching and needed to get back to the basics to continue finding joy in teaching. I, too, find joy in prioritizing the key aspects teens need: real reading skills. I look forward to reading about more practices I can add to ensure my classroom delivers more of what we all need: focus, simplicity, and tranquility.

Check back through the summer for quotes, reflections, book reviews, and discussion.
